A Bit About Me

If I were a young person today, I'm pretty sure I could easily be diagnosed with ADHD.

 

I'm an ideas guy who helps organisations do things better. 

 

My value-add is my ability to identify unique innovations that make a measurable difference. 

 

With over forty years of innovative marketing, sales, operations, and leadership experience - many in director roles, I have seen all the issues that give leaders headaches. at Vodafone Group, Reach (Mirror Group), Kwik-Fit, and my marketing agency InChannel (clients included McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Walmart, ScottishPower, UK Local Authorities, and The Salvation Army),

 

Typically, clients brief me on an issue and then take advantage of my audit service, where I provide independent detailed analysis, conclusions and recommendations. Many additional improvements also emerge - indeed, when clients engage me, I guarantee at least six additional measurable improvements that can be implemented instantly.

My work has also enabled me to develop stand-alone initiatives that help not-for-profit organisations. In 2019, I set up Fun and Fit Bike (funandfitbike.com), a Community Interest Company (CIC) that helps organisations improve the health and wellness of their stakeholders. Over five thousand adults and young people have enjoyed the experience. In 2020, I set up a care service provider buying group to enable members to obtain ethically sourced and priced PPE - it continues to provide quality products and beneficial prices to over twenty member organisations today.

Recently launched social enterprise Fun and Fit Bike which delivers programmes to help adults and children improve their health and wellbeing in a fun way.

My degree is in economics and marketing (BA) and I have Chartered Marketer status from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CiM) as well as Associate membership of the Market Research Society (MRS).

I have lectured in market research for Cambridge Business School and led courses in this field for the Institute of Sales and Marketing, Dubai.

Most of my career has been in marketing and business management, working in senior roles for companies such as Kwik-Fit, Vodafone Group. Reach Plc and Scottish Power. 

I went on to start my own marketing agency and ran it successfully for over ten years, employing a team of up to six marketing professionals. During this period, I moved the business into the areas of market research and social marketing, winning contracts with Local Authorities across Scotland to provide research and strategy support for care of older people and school meals services. I found the work in understanding and shaping the delivery of these services appealing and it gave me a lasting interest in how young and older disadvantaged and vulnerable people in Scotland are supported. Accordingly, I keep myself informed on national policy and the landscape of these areas. 

More recently, I moved into freelance marketing and business start-up consultancy, including interim roles, as well as starting a social enterprise business, Fun and Fit Bike CIC. 

Fun and Fit Bike is the smoothie bike reinvented into a unique programme that delivers learning experiences on health and wellbeing, as well as life skills such as confidence, resilience, and STEM, to people of all ages and abilities. It has been a great success, attracting interest and paid-for bookings from education, community and corporate customers across the UK including Glasgow City and Edinburgh City Councils, Marriott Hotels, Scottish Power and SCVO.

The advent of Covid-19 has temporarily halted Fun and Fit Bike and much of my consultancy work. Fortunately, I have been able to pivot into the area of PPE supply, which has brought me into contact with many care service organisations and strengthened my interest in this sector. 

This unprecedented time has accelerated my passion to do more in the charitable/third sector and I believe my experience and skillsets would allow me to add value to an organisation that is seeking to further improve its performance, particularly through the areas of strategy development, service delivery and stakeholder engagement/satisfaction. 

I have a BA degree from combined studies at the University of the West of Scotland and the Open University. I am married with two grown up daughters and have just become a proud grandfather. Outside of work, I lead an active life participating in many sports including cycling, walking, golf, and football as well as taking an interest in my local community. Travel is also a passion. Apart from my family, my proudest achievement is in realising my ambition to build my own home.

Although undertaken a few years ago, I have led the following projects.

This is a community information website for the town of East Kilbride. I started this site - and create most of the content myself - as a means of being involved in supporting my local community. 

Recently, I have been looking at using the model as a means of teaching people skills in digital publishing, from website design to content creation, with the idea that they could create their own community site.
